Sunrise vs. Sunset Photos in Hawaii: Which Is Better for Your Session?
One of the first decisions you'll make when planning a Hawaii photography session is whether to schedule it at sunrise or sunset.
Both are beautiful, but they create very different experiences.
Here's how to decide.
Why choose sunrise?
There is something special about a Hawaiian beach first thing in the morning.
The beaches are generally quieter, temperatures are cooler and the light can be beautifully soft.
For families visiting from the mainland, sunrise can also be much easier than it sounds. Because of the time difference, children often wake up extremely early during the first few days of vacation.
Instead of fighting the 5:00 a.m. wake up, use it to your advantage.
Have your session in the morning, grab breakfast afterward and have the entire day ahead of you.
Why choose sunset?
Sunset is the classic choice for Hawaii photography, and for good reason.
The light becomes warmer as the sun lowers, and depending on the location and conditions, the sky can develop beautiful pink, orange and golden tones.
Sunset also works well if you want to dress up and make your session part of an evening out.
Take your photos, then head to dinner afterward.
Which is better for families?
For family photography, the answer is usually whichever time works best for your children.
If your toddler is cheerful at 6:30 a.m. but exhausted by 6:00 p.m., choose sunrise.
If your family loves slow mornings and everyone is happiest in the evening, sunset probably makes more sense.
Lighting matters, but mood matters more.
Which is better for couples?
Couples generally have a little more flexibility.
Sunrise offers privacy, quiet beaches and a softer feeling. Sunset tends to feel warmer and more romantic and fits naturally before an evening out.
If you're honeymooning, consider doing one of your first mornings at sunrise. Jet lag may already have you awake, and you'll get to experience the island before most people are out for the day.
What about clouds?
Don't panic if your forecast shows clouds.
Some of the most flattering photography light happens when there is cloud cover. Hawaii's weather also changes quickly, and the forecast you see several days beforehand may not accurately represent the conditions at your exact location.
A cloudy session can still be gorgeous.
So, sunrise or sunset?
Choose based on your family's schedule, where you're staying, the ages of your children and the experience you want.
